Who Is Jan?

Jan is a weaver and a fiber artist. She started weaving as a child on a small, metal frame loom, weaving potholders from cotton loops. As was common in her family, she studied science in college and graduate school and pursued a career as a chemist. After retirement, Jan once again found the joy of weaving, studying both Navajo-style weaving and Andean backstrap weaving with Jacquetta Nisbet and Sarah Natani of the Navajo Nation.
Jan expanded her weaving world with courses at the Mendocino Art Center, studying a variety of weaving techniques on multi-shaft floor looms. With the development of quality on-line courses, Jan continues to grow her weaving artistry, often combining various techniques into both Navajo-style weavings and wearable art.
Even though the multi-shaft looms dominate her studio, weaving in the Navajo style on a simple frame loom using traditional Navajo tools is still Jan’s favorite. Her portfolio now includes over 80 Navajo-style weavings and 50 scarves and shawls.
Jan’s pieces have been shown in “Woven Art” at CityArt in Point Arena, CA, “Art in the Redwoods”, “Warps and Wefts” and “Warps and Wefts 2012” at Gualala Arts in Gualala, CA, the Placer County Arts Council Pop-Up Gallery in the Roseville, CA Galleria, Seven Stars Gallery in Nevada City, CA and the Nevada County Fair in Grass Valley, CA
